The Saeco Pomia is one of the most popular semi automatic espresso machines on the market. This popularity is most likely due to the fact that the machine is good looking, easy to use, has an attractive price and is made by a respectable European manufacturer.

The biggest drawback of the machine is that you have limited options how you can brew the coffee. This is good if you just want a machine that is easy to use, but if you already now know that you plan to experiment with how you brew your coffee, then this machine is not for you.

The Saeco Poemia review score is 5.5 out of 10 and can be found as number 7 out of 50 semi automatic espresso machines on the bestseller list.

Design

The design of the unit is appealing. The machine is made of stainless steel and high quality ABS plastic, which makes it look like a piece of kitchen equipment that would fit in everywhere.

The machine is available in only one color combination, and that is stainless steel and black.

It is easy to operate because all major features are controlled by a knob that is placed in the center of the front of the unit, and this is supplemented by a series of control lights that enable you to monitor the status of the brewing process.

The unit is equipped with a stainless steel cup warmer on top of the machine. The cup warmer uses passive heat from the coffee brewing, and this means two things; the first cups you brew cannot be heated since there is no passive energy they can benefit from. The second issue is that there is not much passive heat produced when brewing, so not that much heat is transferred to the cups anyway. A better solution is to fill the cups with hot water before they are used.

Price

Value for money

The Saeco Pomia is attractively priced at $90, making it 75% below the average price of a semi-automatic espresso machine. At this price level you cannot expect to get extraordinary features or design elements. You do however get the basics, such as a proper pump pressure and the possibility to use ESP pods. On top of that the machine offers an attractive design and a convenient size. So all in all the machine is an attractive package for those who do not want too much to deal with before getting started with home brewing espresso.

The down side of the machine is that there are no electronics built into the machine to help you manage features that are not related to the actual brewing process. Other machines have auto cleaning and descaling warnings built in, but this is not the case for this machine.

Compared to the competition

The Pomia´s biggest competitor is the number one bestselling semi-automatic espresso machine, the DeLonghi EC155. The two machines are priced at the same $90 mark, and have basically the same size and features. It is very much a matter of brand and design preferences that decides which of the two machines you end up choosing. Other interesting alternatives are the Capresso EC100 or the Melitta Espresso Maker.

Quality

The machine is very compact. Its size is 12x10x8 inches which makes it 40% smaller than the average semi automatic espresso machine. The weight of the machine is also 40% reduced compared to an average machine. It weighs just10 pounds. The water tank is not proportionally reduced in size as well. It has a capacity of 40 ounces, and that is just 15% under the average capacity, and more water capacity is a convenient factor in the daily use of the machine.

The Saeco Pomia can use both ESP pods and ground coffee, and this gives you the option to either make traditional espresso coffee or use the pods for a faster and more convenient way of brewing. It also has a built in frother that makes it possible to make lattes and cappuccino, and it can be used to extract hot water for tea and soups too.

The machine has a pump that produces 15 bar pressure when it is used. 15 bars is enough to make proper espresso but more expensive machines give you the option of brewing with higher pressure, and this gives room for experimenting with your own brewing style.

The Saeco Pomia does not use as much energy as the average machine. It uses 1000 watts, and that is 20% below average.

Finally you should know that the unit has a pressurized port filter and a stainless steel boiler.
