The Rancilio Silvia has been a classic espresso machine for many years. It is not the best-looking machine, but the build quality is the best, and it is known to brew good coffee.

The machine is built with commercial grade components, so most of what you pay for are not visible when looking at the machine, but you will learn to appreciate them in the many years you can expect to use the machine.

The price is $700, and that places it among the top half of the semi-automatic models.

The result of the Rancilio Silvia review score is 7.3 out of 10, and it is the machine’s reputation for quality that pulls up the score the most.

Design

The functions of the machine has been the factor that has dictated the shape and appearance of the machine. This does not mean that it is not appealing to look at, but it means every visual element on the machine is there for a reason. The robust choice of materials is also apparent when you look at the weight of the machine.
The cabinet is made of stainless steel with no visible plastic parts. On the top of the unit, you will find a cup warmer that runs on passive heat from the brewing process. This means that the first cups do not get heated, so if you only plan to use the machine to brew a couple of cups at a time, then you should not expect too much of it.

There are no colour options, you can only get the machine in stainless steel. But then again who would want a machine like this any different way.

Price

Value for money

The price of the Rancilio Silvia is $700 and that is in the high end of the class. However, if you already know that you want a machine that you will use for many years, then even though this machine costs $300 more than the average machine, this might not be that big an issue to you. Especially when you consider the quality aspect. The Silvia is built using only commercial grade parts and this means that you get a quality level that is only matched by semi-automatic espresso machines that cost double of this unit.

Compared to the competition

All machines in the price range around $700 are good machines, from a quality perspective. You would probably base your preferences on how you value design, adjustment options and preferences for special features such as a built in grinder. If you value design then the Francis Francis X1 is a strong competitor, and the same goes for the DeLonghi EC330. People with a preference for features would most likely look into the two Breville models  RM-BES860XL or the BES870XL. A dark horse in the competition could be the Pasquini Liva 90. This machine is priced at $900, but it is built around the same concept of an industrial looking high quality machine.

Quality

The machine has been known and loved for many years as a good espresso machine that is made with good materials, both on the outside and inside the machine.

The machine is very heavy and robust. It weighs 31 pounds, which is 85% more that the average weight of a semi-automatic machine. To put this in perspective the size is 9x11x13 inches and that is 20% smaller than the average semi-automatic espresso machine. The relative compact size does not mean that the water tank is smaller. It is in fact 40% bigger than average, and has a capacity of 67 ounces, so you should not expect to fill up the machine too often.

The heat up time can be an issue for people with a tight morning routine. It takes 5 minutes to heat up and that is 130% slower than the average time of 2 minutes.

The energy consumption is quite good. The machine uses 1100 watts, so it is just a bit less than the average consumption.

One element that you should be aware of is that the machine is sensitive towards the coffee quality, and it requires fine graded coffee. This means either that you must have a high end coffee grinder yourself, or that you should always buy fine graded coffee for the machine.

Other quality features include a double spout and an integrated cup heater on top of the machine. It also has a 300-ml. high quality brass boiler. The unit is shipped with a scoop and a plastic tamper. The tamper will most likely be replaced by a quality metal unit by most users if they do not have one already.

As an option, you can buy a pod kit that makes it possible to use coffee pods.

  • Double spout
  • Optional capsule or pod kit avalible
  • Tamper (plastic)
  • Integrated cup heater
  • Stainless steal cabinet
  • 300 ml. brass ceddel
  • Messuring Scoop
