The DeLonghi Kmix is a beautiful looking simple and easy to use semi-automatic espresso machine.

The machine is very popular. It is placed at number 14 on the bestseller list, and this is most likely because the machine has a perfect match of nice design, ease of use and an affordable price.

The Kmix is versatile when it comes to the brewing method. It can either brew coffee from ground coffee or from ESP coffee pods, so you can choose the convenient pod solution, or do you own experiments with ground coffee.

The DeLonghi Kmix espresso machine review score is 6.3.

Design

The design of this machine is without question one of the unit’s most important features. It looks timeless and modern at the same time. This is probably because it has the right mix of a classic shape with a modern finish. The machine was launched in 2011, and it seems to be a piece of equipment that you would expect to see as modern looking for years to come.

The machine is constructed in die-cast aluminum, making the machine look and feel like a more costly machine than it actually is.

The Kmix comes equipped with a cup-warming tray that is found on top of the machine. It uses passive heat from the machine to heat up the cups, and this means that the machine needs to have been used for a while before the heating of the cups will have effect. Since most people probably only make a few cups at a time, then the actual effect of the cup tray might not be that valuable.

The machine is available in many design options. It comes in an all aluminum cabinet version, and in 8 other different colors: Black, white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange and magenta. The unit is also available in an aluminum version.

Price

Value for Money

The DeLonghi Kmix is priced at around $300, and that is 30% below the average price of a semi automatic espresso machine, so from a price point of view the machine is attractive. However, from a feature point of view, you get what is expected, nothing more. The real value of the unit in the quality of the machine is the compact size, the ease of use and its looks.

The machine does not have any electronic controls that help you brew and maintain the machine such as automatic programs and descaling warnings. It is also missing measuring gauges to monitor the temperature and the pressure.

Compared to the competition

The competitors are other machines from know European espresso machine brands such as KRUPS and Gaggia. Gaggia is especially strong in this segment and has the Baby Class, the New Baby and the Evolution in this price range. From a feature point of view all of the machines are very similar, so it is probably design and brand preferences that will determine which model to choose.

The 5 best price alternatives

Quality

The Kmix is quite small. Its dimensions are 11x7x14 inches, which is 30% smaller than an average semi-automatic espresso machine. The compact size means that it is easy to fit into almost any size kitchen environment. The Kmix also has a small water tank, the size of it is just 34 ounces, and that is 30% less than the size of the average semi automatic espresso machine. A small sized water tank is not so convenient, because it means that you will have to refill it more often, so that is a drawback you should be aware of.

Another issue is the weight. The Kmix only weighs 7 pounds and that is less than 60% below the average weight. You can not say that there is a direct correlation between the weight of a machine and its quality, but it is known that the high end models use much heavier components because they are built to handle water and pressure in a durable way.

The heat up time is about 2 minutes, and that makes the machine approximately 10% faster than the average machine.

The Kmix is equipped with a 15 bar pump, and that is sufficient to produce proper espresso, but a more expensive machine delivers higher pressure and this gives the more advances baristas room to experiment with their own coffee brewing style.

The energy consumption of the DeLonghi Kmix is an issue with this machine. It consumes 1500 watts and that is more than 25% more than average machine. There is no specific area or feature of this machine that can explain this issue. The machine is smaller than average and uses less pump pressure than average too, so you would expect the level to be below average.

The machine has a built in swivel jet frother that makes it possible to make cappuccino and latte drinks. It also comes with a dual filter holder, and it can brew with ESP coffee pods. Finally you should know that the machine has an adjustable steam emission.

  • Die-cast aluminum construction
  • Swivel jet frother
