The DeLonghi Icona ECO310 is one of the most popular semi automatic espresso machines on the market today. The success of the machine can be attributed to a fair priced unit that is made by one of the leading Italian espresso makers. On top of that the design is appealing, it looks modern but with classic lines and proportions.

The machine has a few drawbacks; the two most important are that the cabinet is not made of stainless steel and that the heat up time is much longer than the average semi-automatic machine.

The Icona is found at number 10 out of 50 semi automatic espresso machines on the bestseller list and the DeLonghi Icona ECO310 Review Score is 6.0 out of 10.

The Icona has an appealing design. It looks classic and modern at the same time and has some nice proportions between the different components of the machine. The cabinet is made of high-gloss plastic and this makes the machine look good, but it is not in the same league as a stainless steel machine. The cabinet is available in four different colors, red, white, blue and black.

The machine is a part of a series of kitchen appliances from DeLonghi with an Icona sub brand name. There is also a kettle and a toaster available in the series, and they are all available in the same four colors, so it is possible to combine them to have a unified stylish set of appliances.

The unit is simple to operate. You just have 3 different buttons that let you control the all the different functions of the machine.

Value for money

The Icona is attractively priced at around $160, and that makes it 60% cheaper that the average semi-automatic espresso machine. At this price level, it is not expected that a unit has a lot of extraordinary features, and this is also the case with the Icona. What you do get is a well know technology and the basis that will enable you to brew espresso at home. The design and the compact size are the two main elements where this machine stands out in a positive way.

Compared to the competition

There are two kinds of competitors to this machine. The first contains machines like the Espressione Cafe Minutto and the Capressio EC100, they both have more features and are lower priced that the Icona, but they do not have as strong brand reputation as DeLonghi. The second competitor group consist of machines from know European coffee machine brands such as Gaggia and Philips. They have nothing more that the basic features and they are priced closer to $200, but they do have a known reputation for building quality machines.

The size of the machine is almost spot-on the same size as the average espresso machine. Its proportions are 10x9x12 inches. The weight however is much lighter than average. It weighs just12 pounds which is 30% below the average weight. The relatively low weight can most likely be attributed to the fact that many machines have steel cabinets and this increases the average weight.

The Icona is good in many respects, but it falls short in one, and that is the heat up time. The average heat up time for a semi-automatic espresso machine is 2 minutes, and the Icona uses 6 minutes to heat up. On the plus side however is the energy consumption. It uses just 1050 watts, and that is 15% less than the average machine.

Another good quality aspect of the machine is that it can use ESP coffee pods, because it has a built in 2 in 1-filter holder. This means that you can ether brew coffee the espresso way, grinding and stamping the coffee to your liking, or you can use the convenient coffee pods and just make a quick cup with no fuss. If you choose the espresso way, you will appreciate that the tamper is built into the machine.

The machine has a built in 15-bar pump and comes with a cup warmer at the top on the unit. This uses passive heat from the brewing to heat up the cups.

The Icona is equipped with a “Cappuccino System” frother. You can use it to mix stream and milk to create froth for your drinks. The steam boiler is separate from the coffee boiler and this means that it can be operated independently from the coffee brewing process, and that it is faster because there is no dependency on the coffee brewing process. The boiler is made of stainless steel, and the same is the case of the frothing arm and the drip tray.

  •  15 bar pump pressure
  • Can use ESE pods
  • Stainless steel frothing arm
  • Cup warmer
  • Removable stainless steel drip tray
  • 2-1 filter holder
  • Build in tamper
  • Incorporated crema device
  • 3-button operation
  • Stainless steel boiler
