The DeLonghi EC5 is among the cheapest semi-automatic espresso machines on the market. This makes this machine ideal if you are planning to start brewing espresso-style coffee at home or if you are looking for a machine that can make you a nice cup of espresso coffee occasionally.

However, if you are more serious about your espresso brewing plans, then you should look for more advanced machines that brew the coffee at a higher steam pressure than the EC5 does.

We rate the Delonghi EC5 a 4.3 out of 10.

DeLonghi is known for making some of the prettiest espresso machines on the market, but the EC5 is not among them. The design is just not very harmonious. One example is the very dominant safety cap that is on top of the unit.
We recognize that is has a practical and safety function, but from an aesthetic point of view, it is just not that appealing. From a functional point of view, the design is however quite practical. The machine is made so that the primary functions are accessible and easy to manage.

Value for money

The machine is priced at around $40, and this makes it among the cheapest espresso machines on the market. The biggest drawback of the unit is that it is steam based and the machine is not commercial grade. The brewing pressure is not around the 17–19 bar pressure that is required for optimal espresso brewing, so the coffee quality is not as high as it could be with other espresso machines.

It is a plus that the machine comes equipped with a swivel jet frothier, which makes it possible to make drinks with steamed milk, such a cappuccino. This is not a normal feature at this price range.

The machine comes with a heat-resistant glass carafe, and that is not normal at this price range. Other quality features that are worth mentioning are the indicator lights and theremovable drip tray.
